Periodontal maintenance is a thorough cleaning procedure used to stop the development or progression of periodontal disease and gingivitis. During the procedure, we remove plaque and tartar from your teeth and gums. We’ll also check your gums and teeth for any signs of health problems.
How is this different from a routine teeth cleaning?
Periodontal maintenance is a more inclusive and thorough cleaning than a routine teeth cleaning. We recommend these cleanings for anyone healing from a periodontal treatment such as a flap surgery or osseous surgery. They help speed up the healing process and prevent recurring gum disease issues.
Whereas a routine teeth cleaning is recommended every 6 months, we may recommend a periodontal maintenance cleaning as often as every 3 months. We may also recommend a schedule at 6 or 12 month intervals, depending on your dental health history and specific needs. A regular maintenance schedule is your best line of defense against the progress of gum disease.
What is involved in a periodontal maintenance cleaning?
During the procedure, we will clean your teeth and gums, check for signs of dental health problems, and help you prevent any future issues.
We will remove any tartar and plaque buildups, both above and below the gumline. We may perform a deep cleaning procedure if necessary to achieve a deeper clean. We may also take x-rays to determine the extent of any bone or gum issues.
You should be leaving your appointment with whiter teeth and fresher breath. Removing plaque, stains, and tartar can help improve the overall look and feel of your mouth.
